Berganio Advances in U.S. Publinx

Dave Berganio of Sylmar breezed into the round of 32 Wednesday by winning his first match in the United States Public Links Golf Championship at Riverdale Dunes Golf Course in Brighton, Colo.

Berganio, who shot consecutive three-under-par 68s to earn top honors in the tournament’s two qualifying rounds, defeated Bill McDonald of Troy, Mich., 6 and 5.

Darren Angel of Northridge slipped to a seven-over-par 79 for a two-round total of 153, narrowly making the cut in the Rolex Tournament of Champions at the Horseshoe Bend Country Club in Roswell, Ga. Angel is 13 strokes off the lead.

In the girls’ division, Allison Wilson of North Hollywood followed a first-round 87 with a 77 but failed to make the cut. Elise Kimm of Valley Village shot an 88 and also missed the cut.

Equestrian

The 1993 U.S National Vaulting Championships, which began Wednesday at the Ventura County Fairgrounds, will continue through Sunday. Vaulting, which originated in Europe as a training sport for cavalry, blends gymnastics and horseback riding.

Scheduled to compete is Isabelle Bibbler, 19, of Woodside, Calif. Bibbler, coach and co-founder of the Woodside Vaulting Team, will be one of three women representing the U.S. at the Open European Championships in Holland.

Ken Lynch of Cal State Northridge has earned a spot on the U.S. men’s national volleyball “B” team. Lynch is one of five Matadors who will play in the Olympic Festival beginning next week in San Antonio, Tex. Joining Lynch on the West team is Gene Urcan. Craig Hewitt and Jon Baer will play for the South; Matt Unger will play for the East. John Price of CS Northridge will coach the North. . . . Northridge Athletic Director Bob Hiegert was selected to serve as head of the U.S. volleyball team delegation when it plays in World League competition this weekend in Greece. . . . Alan Segal has been named head coach of the Ventura Slammers of the Women’s Western Volleyball League. Segal, a former assistant with the WWVL’s Santa Monica Sharks, replaces Lisa Bevington, who resigned after last season. . . . Paris Blumenthal of Studio City won a bronze medal in the AAU/USA Karate National Championships in Cincinnati on July 4.
