VENTURA : Powerboats Prepare for Channel Dash

Share

The 5 m.p.h speed limit in Ventura Harbor will be exceeded by about 100 m.p.h. Sunday when more than two dozen powerboats blast across the water in the sixth annual Ventura Channel Dash.

Sanctioned by the Pacific Offshore Powerboat Racing Assn., the races begin at noon at the harbor.

The boats, following a 20-mile course that doesn’t stray far from shore, will race to an oil platform, the Ventura Pier and back to the harbor. The public will be able to watch from several sites along the coast.

The boats, ranging in size from 25 to 42 feet and costing from $25,000 to $400,000, have either a single-engine outboard or twin inboards with a combined 1,900 horsepower. The large boats will race six laps, the small boats will race three.

Pit passes to view the boats will be sold for $1 in Ventura Harbor Village, with the money going to the Ventura Police Department’s anti-drug DARE program. Last year’s event raised more than $4,000.
