D.A. to Be Honored for Fraud Program
Ventura County Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury has been recognized for a program that uses public and private money to fund prosecutions of false workers’ compensation insurance claims.
The Ventura County district attorney’s office was selected for the 1993 National Assn. of Counties Achievement Award.
NACO Executive Director Larry E. Naake singled out the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Prosecution Unit for successfully addressing a significant concern in the county, Bradbury said.
The plan met some controversy when proposed by the district attorney due to charges of potential conflicts of interest.
Legal scholars criticized Bradbury for using private money to prosecute fraud cases. Also, the names of those who contributed to the fund were withheld by county officials until a formal request was made by The Times under the California Public Records Act.
No one has been charged under the new program because an investigator has not yet been hired, Bradbury said.
