ARB Approves 2 Arco Reformulated Diesels: Atlantic Richfield Co. became the third oil company to have its cleaner-burning diesel formulas certified by the California Air Resources Board. The new fuels contain lower amounts of pollution-causing sulfur, aromatic hydrocarbons, particulates, benzene and other toxic compounds and must replace conventional diesel in the state’s fuel pumps by Oct. 1. New diesel formulas devised by Chevron Corp. and Texaco Inc. were approved earlier. ARB Chairwoman Jananne Sharpless said this should quell worries over the availability of adequate supplies by the fall deadline. The ARB estimates that the new fuel will cost about 6 cents more a gallon.
