GLENDALE : Schools May Be Due Lottery Windfall
Glendale schools may be getting an unexpected windfall from the state lottery.
For the months from April to June, 1993, Glendale Unified School District could receive up to $90 per student, compared with earlier county estimates of $74 per student, said Stephen R. Hodgson, assistant superintendent of business services. That would mean at least $400,000 extra for the school district, the difference between the total from the revised amount and the previous amount.
The district’s 1992-93 enrollment figures total 28,061, and the amount of lottery money per student is based on state Department of Education projections.
Board members will decide after Sept. 15 what to do with the money. The district has a $113-million budget, Hodgson said.
Board President Jane Whitaker suggested Wednesday that the additional lottery income go toward more programs for troubled youths, most of which were cut two years ago.
“I would really like to be able to restore some of our at-risk programs,” Whitaker said. “I don’t know if it’s possible, (but) even modest amounts would begin to help us there.”
