U.S. Housing Vacancy Rate Down Slightly: The U.S. housing vacancy rate declined to 7.6% in the second quarter, partly erasing an increase in the first quarter, the Commerce Department said. “The vacancy rate was highest in central cities,” the report said. In the first quarter, the vacancy rate increased to 7.9%, up from 7.1% during the final quarter of 1992.
