A spate of violence in Ventura and Oxnard left four people wounded from gunfire, including a former gang member who runs a youth boxing program and a 43-year-old man hit during a drive-by shooting, police said.

In a gang-related incident, Ruben Juarez, 21, was shot once in the stomach with a small-caliber handgun at 1:08 a.m. Saturday. Juarez, who is a coach for the youth boxing program at the Westpark Recreation Center in Ventura. He was listed in fair condition late Saturday after undergoing surgery at Ventura County Medical Center.

The shooting occurred in front of the Stop ‘N’ Go market at 1007 E. Main St. when Juarez and two friends got into an argument with four alleged gang members from Oxnard, police said.

One Oxnard youth then drove his car toward one of the Ventura youths, who kicked the side of the car. Police said one of the Oxnard youths then raised a small-caliber handgun and fired several rounds at the Ventura group, striking Juarez and a friend, Felipe Ramirez, 18.

Juarez ran bleeding into the convenience store as Ramirez hid and his two friends started to drive away, only to be stopped by police. Ramirez was taken to Ventura County Medical Center. He was treated for a gunshot wound in the foot and released.

Shortly after the shooting police stopped a car matching the description of the assailants’ car as it headed toward Oxnard.

Four people were arrested: Enrique Mora, 22; Mario Lizama, 26; Pedro Valadez, 24, and an unidentified juvenile, all of Oxnard. The adults were booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and were being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. An additional $5,000 was added to Mora’s bail because of a charge of violating his probation. The juvenile was taken to Juvenile Hall.

Investigators later found three shell casings on Laurel Street next to the convenience store drive-way. And officers went knocking on doors looking for possible witnesses.

Juarez, Ramirez and a female friend are all “reported” gang members, a police statement said. Friends, however, said Juarez has not been involved in a gang for several years.

Because of the shooting, a boxing exhibition scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Westpark was canceled, Westpark staff member Che Aranda said.

“I told the little kids what happened today and they were just stunned. They didn’t believe it,” Aranda said. Later, he said, a group of youths gathered at the park to make a get-well card for Juarez.

In another shooting, Robert Sean Miller, 17, was hit in the left leg during a roadside confrontation about 1 p.m. Saturday.

Robert said he was driving along Bristol Road near Johnson Drive when he honked at a teen-ager he thought he knew. The teen-ager, who was walking on the shoulder of the street, then raised both arms and made an obscene gesture, Robert said.

“When we drove by he raised up his arms and flipped us off,” Robert said. “I don’t take that.”

Robert pulled his car onto the shoulder and got out with his two friends.

“Before we could say anything he pulled out a gun,” said Tommy Lavin, 17, one of Robert’s friends. “He didn’t even say one word. He just pointed and fired.”

After Robert was struck in the leg, his friends drove him to Community Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released. The gunman fled on foot.

Police searched the area, including a nearby lemon grove off Bristol Road, but did not find the teen-ager or the weapon. Police have no suspects in the shooting, although Tommy told officers he thought he recognized the assailant as a student at Buena High School.

In another incident, a 43-year-old Oxnard man was injured in a drive-by shooting around 8:15 p.m. Friday. The victim, Edward Wells, was treated at St. John’s Regional Medical Center for a hand wound and was released.

Wells was “walking down the street when a car drove by and starting shooting at him,” said Sgt. Dan Christian of the Oxnard Police Department.

Wells told police the incident occurred in the 500 block of West Gonzales Road in Oxnard when a maroon or burgundy car pulled up next to him. A passenger then leaned out the window, pulled out a handgun and began shooting.

There were no witnesses and Oxnard police have no suspects, Christian said.
