LOS ANGELES : Bail for Doctor in Workers’ Comp Case Cut to $2 Million

Share

A Beverly Hills doctor accused in an alleged multimillion-dollar insurance fraud scam persuaded a Municipal Court commissioner Tuesday to lower his bail from $10 million to $2 million.

Dr. Mark Kaplan, 53, also got his ex-wife Polina Ioffe’s bail cut in half, to $1 million. In exchange, Kaplan promised Municipal Commissioner John Ladner that he will surrender $2 million in a Swiss bank account.

Kaplan and Ioffe, 48, and nine other people are accused of running a workers’ compensation mill that caused losses estimated at $30 million, Deputy Dist. Atty. Rebecca Noblin said. Defense attorneys say an order that the Department of Insurance obtained last week to freeze Kaplan’s and Ioffe’s assets in Southern California left the couple “penniless.”
