Northwest Union Accepts Concessions: The International Assn. of Machinists, Northwest’s largest union, announced that it overwhelmingly approved an $886-million deal designed to keep the carrier out of bankruptcy court. The package gives employees up to 37.5% ownership in the company and three seats on Northwest’s board in exchange for deep cuts in pay and benefits. It was ratified by 81% of the union members voting across the country, said Tom Pedersen, president of the Machinists’ District 143.
