A Brief for Gun Control: Pettit & Martin, the San Francisco law firm where eight people were killed by a gunman on July 1, has formed a group to push for handgun control.

The firm, which has a 15-lawyer office in Newport Beach, has organized the Legal Community Against Violence. “It’s an outgrowth of the shootings,” said Charles G. Ehrlich, a litigation partner in San Francisco. “It’s intended to mobilize the legal community.”

The group will lobby both federal and state legislators to control assault weapons and handguns, according to its mission statement. It also plans to support other states defending gun control laws and victims or families suing gun manufacturers and sellers.

A final goal is education, the statement says, “to fight the veneer of detached machismo the gun sellers and their allies have constructed. Public education efforts can illustrate the real world impact of assault weapons and handguns on families and communities.”
