In a move to help prevent a repeat of flooding during the past two years, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors this week approved a contract for construction of a 375-foot extension of a flood control channel next to Old Topanga Canyon Road near Mulholland Highway.

The board on Tuesday approved a $379,650 contract for the 15-foot-wide, 6 1/2-foot-deep reinforced concrete channel, which will include a system of inlets, said county Department of Public Works spokeswoman Jean Granucci.

Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-September and continue for 60 working days, she said.

“Because there has been so much rainfall in that area last year and the year before, we hope the project will be done by the time the rainy season comes this year,” Granucci said.

Construction will begin only after Calabasas city officials have determined the effects of the project on wildlife in the area, Granucci said. Some lanes on Old Topanga Canyon, west of Calabasas High School, may be closed during the project, she said.

The contract was awarded to West Covina-based O.S. Beavers General Engineering Contractor.
