Make-A-Wish Group Calls for Volunteers

The local chapter of a group dedicated to granting the wishes of severely ill children is seeking volunteers.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Tri-Counties needs people to help with publicity, fund raising and other activities, chapter President Jimmy Caplan said.

Established in the mid-1980s, the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization grants the wishes of children from Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties who are suffering from terminal or life-threatening illnesses.

Caplan said the chapter typically succeeds in granting the requests of 30 to 40 ill children each year.

A popular request is for the children and their families to visit Disneyland, he said.

The average cost of fulfilling a wish is $3,500, but many businesses such as airlines and hotels often donate part of their services, which reduces the amount of cash that the foundation must raise, Caplan said.

To volunteer or for more information, call the foundation at 987-0377.
