DANA POINT : City Packet Explains Slippage Prevention
To help residents of the slide-plagued cliffs above Pacific Coast Highway, city officials have distributed a brochure that tells homeowners how to prevent slope slippages in their neighborhood.
The packet discusses easy, inexpensive ways to shore up homes on the Capistrano Beach bluffs.
The recommendations include simple irrigation systems and planting vegetation that reduce the chance of slope failure during extended rains.
“While some geological conditions on the bluff are completely natural,” said Ed Knight, city director of community development, “we’d like to identify means to potentially reduce future erosion and possibly increase the life of the bluffs.”
The mile-long section of million-dollar homes is adjacent to a section of bluffs in San Clemente that collapsed in February, ruining five homes.
Several homeowners in Dana Point and San Clemente sued both cities for improperly maintaining water lines in the area.
“Although the brochure focuses on Capistrano Beach, because the slope conditions there are most sensitive, the recommendations are suitable for all bluff-top lots in the city,” Knight said.
