Richard Buchanan, a free-agent wide receiver who failed to win an invitation from any NFL team last season, will be given a chance to impress the Rams tonight when they play the Cardinals in an exhibition game at Phoenix.

Coach Chuck Knox announced that wide receivers Todd Kinchen (knee injury) and Jeff Chadwick (hamstring injury) will not play against the Cardinals.

Henry Ellard, who is expected to start opposite Flipper Anderson, reinjured his ankle in Friday’s practice but is also expected to play.

Anthony Thompson, who will be the Rams’ starting running back tonight, was the Cardinals’ second-round pick in 1990. When he failed to sign a contract immediately, Johnny Johnson became the Cardinals’ top back. Thompson became lost in the background.

The Cardinals released him last season, and the Rams claimed him off waivers.
