2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke (Roc: $10.; 236 pp). Stanley Kubrick’s “2001” was a landmark film for Baby-Boomers, many of whom will be dismayed to realize this new edition of the novel marks the 25th anniversary of its release. However, it’s reassuring to discover that “2001” remains an intriguing novel, although it lacks the grandeur of Clarke’s “Childhood’s End,” which also explores the idea of humanity overcoming its limitations to merge with a greater, transcendent intellect.
