A gas tanker crashed on Interstate 40 on Monday in a fiery accident that killed the driver and stranded hundreds of motorists, including those in a 20-bus caravan bound for Denver to see the Pope.

The crash closed the freeway’s eastbound lanes at the crash site in the Mojave Desert for most of the afternoon. The lanes were reopened in the late afternoon.

The wreck delayed hundreds of motorists, including Cardinal Roger M. Mahony and the caravan carrying 875 teen-agers to Denver for a conference attended by Pope John Paul II.
