Gilman Finishes Third in 1,500 Freestyle Swim

Buenaventura Swim Club’s Rebecca Gilman won a bronze medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle Tuesday, the final day of competition in the National Junior Olympics West in Minneapolis. Gilman, 13, clocked a time of 17 minutes 6.34 seconds. Teammate Brooke Thrasher, 18, placed fifth in 17:11.36.

Gilman also anchored Buenaventura’s silver-medal winning 400 medley relay team, combining with Miranda Walz, Nicole Beck and Marissa Roarty.

Golf

Three players from the area advanced to the championship round of match play at last week’s 92nd Southern Championship at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

Michel Alpert of Braemar Country Club in Tarzana lost to Kari Close of Old Ranch Country Club in Seal Beach, 4 and 2, in the second flight. In the third flight, Marilyn Tritle of North Ranch defeated Bette Beron of PGA West in La Quinta, 2-up.

Selda Hollander of El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana defeated Samm Klaparda of Riviera Country Club, 2 and 1, in the fourth flight.

Entries are being accepted for the Bob Artz Memorial junior tournament, which will begin Friday at Sinaloa golf course, a par-three layout in Simi Valley.

It is a two-man best-ball event. Players between 15 and 18 will play 27 holes and those 14 and under will play 18. Information: 805-581-2662.

Track and Field

Isaac Turner, a June graduate of Burbank High, and Tony Serpas, formerly of Birmingham, will attend Glendale and Long Beach City colleges, respectively, this fall.

Turner, a 400-meter specialist as a junior, focused on the 800 this year.

He won the Foothill League title, placed fourth in the Southern Section Division I championships, and qualified for the finals of the state championships.

Serpas placed second in the 100 in the 1992 and ’93 City Section championships for Birmingham. He also finished fourth in the 200 as a senior after finishing fifth as a junior.

Baseball

Justin McKitterick of Woodland Hills is among a team of 14- and 15-year-old California players playing in the seventh Friendship Series in Beijing, China. The series began Sunday and continues through Aug. 17.

Bowling

Barry Gurney, 52, of West Hills, was the top qualifier entering match play of the $65,000 Queens City PBA Senior Open in Springfield, Mo., after averaging 235 through 18 games, including the tournament’s only 300 in his second game.

Gurney, who had a pin-fall total of 4,237, led fellow left-hander Marlin Hamil of Warner Robins, Ga., by 192 pins.

Gurney is searching for his first tour victory since a championship at the Lansing (Mich.) Open in his 1992 rookie year.
