UAW to Pick Target Company: Hoping to jump-start this year’s slow-moving contract talks, the United Auto Workers plans to choose one of the Big Three auto makers on Aug. 30 to set a pattern for the rest of the industry. The UAW chooses this “target company” during negotiations on each of its contracts. The current contract expires Sept. 14. The target usually sets the pattern for the rest of the industry. However, it is also the first company subject to a job action should talks bog down. All three companies have said they want to be the target.
