Gay Groups Stage Protest Against Pontiff, Clinton
Representatives of gay rights groups held a small but vocal protest Thursday near the site of Pope John Paul II’s meeting with President Clinton, but the group was kept out of earshot of the two leaders.
“Pope go home,” the group of about 50 protesters chanted while they awaited the Pope.
The group, protesting the Catholic Church’s stance on homosexuality and what they called “selling out” by Clinton, said they wanted to send a message to both men.
“What Clinton did with gays in the military is atrocious. He sold us out,” said Monica Erdosh, one of the protesters.
Three blocks away a group of anti-abortion protesters held signs criticizing Clinton’s policy supporting abortion rights.
Police monitored both demonstrations. There were no arrests.
