Two retirees and three businessmen were named Friday as the finalists for this year’s Fernando Award for service to the San Fernando Valley community.

The five finalists were chosen from a list of 17 and were announced in Woodland Hills at the first Jesse McHam Fernando Nomination Luncheon, honoring the 91-year-old businessman who helped establish the award 35 years ago.

They include Gilbert Benjamin, a Granada Hills resident and a retired FBI agent; Bud Brown of Thousand Oaks, a former GTE employee who retired in June; Guy Weddington McCreary, a North Hollywood resident who is with the firm Weddington Investment Partnership; Robert Neiman of Encino who is with the firm Pacific Investment Associates, and Clyde Porter, a Woodland Hills businessman and a Los Angeles resident.

The award is intended to honor the individual who has compiled a record of outstanding and selfless community service in the Valley. The 1993 finalists have supported a host of organizations ranging from community advisory councils and battered women shelters to local history groups and elementary schools.

This year’s recipient will be announced Nov. 5 at a dinner at the Sportsmen’s Lodge in Studio City. Mayor Richard Riordan will present the award.
