GLENDALE : Charity Group Gives Teen Center $25,000

The Glendale Teen Center, facing fund-raising difficulties, has received a $25,000 grant from a Los Angeles charity group, the center’s founder said.

“We were thrilled to receive that kind of support,” Sheila Ellis said. “Frankly, I wouldn’t know what we would have done without it.”

The $25,000 gift came from the Weingart Foundation. Its vice president of grants, Harvey Price, had visited the Glendale Teen Center, 115 E. Lexington Drive, earlier this spring after learning about the center’s financial plight. Price then encouraged Ellis to apply for a grant and the foundation approved Ellis’ application last month.

Ellis opened the center in November with the aim of providing a place for teen-agers to congregate and to learn to respect one another. Services for youths range from recreational activities such as chess and crossword puzzles to tutoring during the school year.

Although it has received donations from the Glendale Galleria and some local businesses and community groups, the center needs continued funding to pay $12,000 in monthly expenses, including rent, salaries, utilities and insurance.

An average of 60 to 90 youths visit the center daily, Ellis said. The facility is open from 2 to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
