CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : LA JOLLA : Man Sets Up Sting in Credit Card Fraud

Share

When police told Raymond Kepple it could take weeks to find the culprit who was making fraudulent charges on his wife’s credit card, he set up his own elaborate sting operation and nabbed a suspect. Kepple, 58, made a citizen’s arrest of Jana Spindel, 25, on Wednesday, after she allegedly attempted to bill nearly $600 worth of his clothing to his wife’s credit card. Kepple’s stint as lawman began Aug. 6 when mail-order clerks from a Los Angeles-area clothing store called Kepple’s home to verify a credit card purchase. They had become suspicious when the telephone order did not match all the information listed in a computer profile, Kepple said. He investigated, located the address and delivered the package himself. When Spindel allegedly signed for the package using Kepple’s wife’s name, Kepple placed her under citizen’s arrest and called police.
