Sierra Madre : City OKs Cap on Utility Tax
The City Council has tentatively approved a cap on the amount local businesses will pay each month in utility taxes.
Council members voted 3 to 2 last week in favor of a plan recommended by the Main Street Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Clem L. Bartolai and Councilman Gary B. Adams dissented.
Last month the council adopted a 6% utility tax on electric, gas, telephone and water services. Low-income families were exempted.
The council is expected to give final approval to the cap Aug. 24. The cap would work in two ways. Businesses with combined utility bills of $500 or more would pay a maximum of $30 a month. Businesses with one or more utility bills above $200 would pay a maximum of $48 a month.
