GARDEN GROVE : Group to Provide Clothes to Needy

Share

The Assistance League and Garden Grove firefighters will launch a clothing drive today with the goal of providing needy youngsters with two complete sets of new clothes to start the school year.

Last year, with economic conditions apparently worsening for many families, the Assistance League clothed 1,200 youngsters, the most in the 25-year history of Operation School Bell.

The need is expected to be at least as great this year, said Bette C. Lewis, Assistance League publicist.

Starting this week, the league will join forces with the firefighters, who will lead the collection drive for the first time.

The Assistance League will sell the collected clothing at its Thrift Shop at 10932 Trask Ave. and use the proceeds to buy new clothes for the children, including underwear, shoes, socks, jackets, dresses, skirts, blouses, jeans and shirts.

Clothing donations may be taken to Garden Grove’s seven fire stations: 11301 Acacia Parkway, 12132 Trask Ave., 12751 Western Ave., 11805 Gilbert St., 12191 Valley View St., 12111 Chapman Ave. and 12162 Forsyth Lane.

The fire stations will have containers available for donations of good, clean clothing from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Aug. 27.

The clothing drive has been the Assistance League’s primary philanthropy for 25 years.
