Baby Found Dead on Bus Bench in Van Nuys

The body of an hours-old infant boy was found Sunday morning on a Van Nuys bus bench, police said.

The infant’s body, wrapped in a blanket, was discovered by a passerby about 9:30 a.m., said Los Angeles Police Sgt. Brett Papworth. The umbilical cord was still attached, he said.

The cause of death was undetermined. “It could be anything,” he said. “The baby might have already been dead when it was deserted. Or maybe it was left alive. Who knows?”

Detectives are looking for a woman who witnesses described as a pregnant-appearing transient who had been seen in the area several days before the body was found, Papworth said.

An autopsy was scheduled.
