SAN CLEMENTE : Work Underway on Flood Channel
Work has started on a flood-control channel that city officials and residents of an expensive housing tract near the Shorecliffs Golf Course believe will protect the bluff-top homes from the threat of landslides.
Before the next rainy season, construction workers expect to have 1,300 feet of concrete runoff channel near Calle Nuevo ready to handle excess floodwaters.
The slopes near the path of the channel have been eroded by past rainstorms, threatening the stability of nearby homes, city officials said. Construction of the first section is expected to be complete by December.
The project is a joint effort between public and private agencies, including the city of San Clemente, golf course owner LHC Investments and the developer that built the housing tract, Centex Homes.
The group plans to complete the remaining section of channel, approximately 1,700 feet, stretching between Calle Nuevo and Calle Grande Vista, during the summer of 1994.
Also in the works is a shallow dirt creek that will replace wetlands disturbed by the project.
Plans for the storm channel project without the shallow stream were rejected by the California Coastal Commission in May, 1992.
The commission approved the revamped plans last March.
