GLENDALE : Murder Charges Filed Against Boy

Prosecutors Monday filed felony charges of murder and brandishing a handgun against a 14-year-old boy accused of fatally shooting his 9-year-old friend in a Glendale apartment, officials said.

The youth, whose name was withheld because of his age, is scheduled to be arraigned today in Pasadena Juvenile Court, Deputy Dist. Atty. Laura Foland-Prever said.

Glendale police arrested the 14-year-old Hoover High School student Thursday after the 1:30 p.m. shooting in the 1200 block of Virginia Avenue. Neighbor Sang Lee, 9, suffered a gunshot wound to his chest and died about 45 minutes later at Glendale Adventist Medical Center, police said.

Investigators believe that the suspect found his father’s .38-caliber revolver in his apartment, loaded it with one bullet and pointed the weapon at the Keppel Elementary fourth-grader to scare him.

The 14-year-old allegedly pulled the trigger twice, with the bullet firing the second time, said Officer Rod Brooks.

Foland-Prever declined to release details of the police report, saying only that “if it (the shooting) was purely accidental, we would not have filed charges.”

Parents of both the suspect and victim could not be reached for comment Monday.

The 14-year-old boy remains in custody at Eastlake Juvenile Hall in East Los Angeles.
