“Big Wave Dave’s” made a big splash in the ratings ocean its first time out, according to figures released Tuesday by the A.C Nielsen Co.

The premiere of the CBS comedy, which stars Adam Arkin, David Morse and Patrick Breen, tied for 13th among the top-ranked shows of the week. The comedy, which revolves around three Chicago buddies who open up a surf shop in Hawaii, also benefited greatly from its “Murphy Brown” lead-in in winning its Monday 9:30 p.m. time slot. CBS said the show scored the highest rating for the period since May 24, when the network broadcast the finale of “Designing Women.”

Kevin Costner again proved to be as popular on the small screen as he is on the large one in ABC’s broadcast of Costner’s baseball saga, “Bull Durham.” The movie, co-starring Susan Sarandon, finished in a three-way tie for 10th out of 87 prime-time network programs.
