Rancho Santiago College has received $750,000 in federal and state grants to improve education for minority students and students at risk of dropping out.

The U.S. Department of Education provided the largest grant, totaling $680,000 over four years, which will pay for a wide range of student services. Designed to improve retention and graduation rates, the program offers low-income, first-generation and disabled students services such as counseling, tutoring and career planning, said district spokesman Dale Ruhe.

The National Science Foundation awarded $30,000 to the district to develop computer software for English-, Spanish- and Vietnamese-speaking students who are deficient in algebra. The grant will also pay for the creation of a program that illustrates applications of calculus without requiring students to perform tedious calculations, Ruhe said.

A $40,000 grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office will be used to fund projects aimed at improving education for students from varied cultural backgrounds.

For example, one program will assist Latinas in overcoming educational barriers such as sex-role stereotypes.
