Olympic Gold Medalist Stewart to Swim in Pierce Charity Event

Melvin Stewart, 1992 Olympic gold medalist and world record-holder in the men’s 200-meter butterfly, will participate in a celebrity relay in a swimathon at Pierce College on Aug. 29.

The charity event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., will be sponsored by a group dedicated to keeping the Pierce swimming pool open year-round.

Karate

Six Ventura County youths placed first in their respective age groups in the USA Karate Federation National Championships last week in Phoenix.

Drew Schultz of Ventura won the 11-year-old male advanced kumite division, and Tracy Baylis of Oxnard won the 11-year-old female intermediate kumite division.

Heather Miller of Oxnard won the 9-year-old female intermediate kumite division. Gene Damachi of Camarillo was first in the 7-year-old male intermediate kata division and third in kumite.

Brian Santo, 11, of Simi Valley, won the male kata division and his brother, Eric, 9, was second.

Patti Ackermann of Reseda finished first in the adult female brown belt kata division.

Golf

David Berganio of Sylmar was beaten, 3 and 2, by Matt Stanford, but the United States held a 6 1/2-3 1/2 lead over Britain and Ireland after the first day of Walker Cup play at Edina, Minn.

Chad Wright of Ventura defeated Darren Humphrey of Newbury Park, 1 up, in the match-play final of the Thousand Oaks City Junior Championships at Los Robles Greens. Wright advanced to the final by defeating Dusty Morton of Ventura, 5 and 4, earlier in the day. Humphrey reached the final by beating Nate Whitson of Ventura, 3 and 2.
