Acoustic Music to Take Dizdar Park Stage

Saturday in Dizdar Park in Camarillo will be sort of an outdoor Inn of the Sixth Happiness where acoustic music fans can take five en route to cloud nine. It’s Henson’s 13th Annual Acoustic Music Festival, sponsored by (who else?) Henson’s Music Center in (where else?) Camarillo.

Even if you’re poor or can’t even afford to pay attention, this five-hour wingding is available to tycoon and pauper alike: It’s free. It’s also a good chance for several local musicians to work on that badly neglected tan.

J. D.’s Last Ride, which will tone down its repertoire of usually raging rockabilly, will headline. One of the very best local female vocalists, Marjorie Extract (she swears that’s really her name), fronts J. D.’s. Also on the bill are a brother and sister act, Mary Kay Burke and Mike Fishell. Burke is the other great local vocalist, and guitar whiz Fishell is, at last count, in about 674 other bands. Both play mostly with the Convertibles but will do a country thing in the park.

No Big Whoop, featuring a bunch of Henson’s employees, will also do a country thang. Bluegrass bands include Blue Moon, Iron Mountain Boys and the Pleasant Valley Bluegrass band, featuring a 12-year-old fiddle player and a 9-year-old mandolin player. Steve Elmer and event founder John Welborn will do the solo folk singer thing.

The show starts at 11:30 a.m. The public is encouraged to bring picnic lunches. Dizdar Park is at 20 Glenn Drive. Take U. S. 101 to Carmen exit, then Ventura Boulevard to Glenn Drive. For more information, call 482-6115.
