HOMER BOY: Ken Hunt’s rookie record of 25 home runs, set in the Angels’ 1961 debut season, had held up for more than 30 years. But outfielder Tim Salmon broke it by two Wednesday night, with 42 games to go in the season. He’s also a shoo-in for American League Rookie of the Year, a first for an Angel. . . . And: Salmon’s on course to pass Wally Joyner’s rookie record of 100 runs batted in. And Tuesday, he turns 25.

PEACE PIPE: U.S. Rep. Robert K. Dornan is still seething that fellow Republican Harriett Wieder jumped parties to support Bill Clinton. The supervisor also supported his opponent when he won reelection last year. But this morning, they’ll set such politics aside, when the county’s congressional delegation meets with the supervisors at the Santa Ana Library. . . . The public session is meant to bring them together on issues affecting the county. The El Toro Marine base and immigration are on the agenda.

PERSONAL TOUCH: At his Anaheim grocery, Lucio Cabrera knew most customers by name. Now that he’s a successful food distributor, says son Julio Cabrera, “He still makes deals on a handshake, and jumps in his van to see customers.” It must work. . . . Hispanic Business magazine this month named his family’s Two Flags Wholesale among its 100 fastest growing Latino-owned companies--its sales jumped 200% in four years, up to $6.9 million last year.

DIGGING FOR CLUES: Cal State Fullerton forensic anthropologist Judy Suchey’s connection of a skeleton found in Laguna Hills and a skull found in Long Beach helped convict serial killer Randy Kraft. She has worked on almost every missing-person case in the Southland since. And now she and her research team are in Reno, Nev., digging up bones in search of clues about unsolved cases of missing children. . . . Suchey has been in hot demand: Reno police had to wait a year and a half to get her team out there.

Salmon’s Run

With 40 games to play, Tim Salmon looks like an easy bet to become the first Angel rookie to hit 30 home runs.

Home Runs by Angel Rookies Tim Salmon, 1993: 27 Ken Hunt, 1961: 25 Devon White, 1987: 24 Lee Thomas, 1961: 24 Wally Joyner, 1986: 22 Willie Aikens, 1979: 21
