Judge Rules Lean Cuisine Ads Deceptive: An administrative law judge in Washington found that Stouffer Food Corp. made deceptive health claims for its Lean Cuisine line of frozen meals, the Federal Trade Commission said. Judge James Timony, acting on an FTC complaint, ruled that magazine advertisements for Lean Cuisine published in 1991 created the impression that the meals were low in sodium when they actually contained an average of 850 milligrams of sodium, more than the amount the government says can be called “low-sodium.” The judge prohibited the Solon, Ohio-based firm from misrepresenting the sodium content of its frozen-food products in the future.
