In Brief
* * Brother Phelps, “Brother Phelps,” Asylum. The ex-lead singers of the Kentucky HeadHunters, Ricky Lee and Doug Phelps turn the bluster down a few notches, but the result is no less banal. Their pretty, bluegrass-inflected harmonies can’t rescue lyrics of the “cuts like a knife” school. Things work best when the tempo is brisk enough that you don’t dwell on the meaninglessness of it all.
New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
