EAST LOS ANGELES : AIDS Hot Line Seeks Bilingual Volunteers
The bilingual AIDS hot line run by Avance Human Services is looking for volunteers to answer calls from people seeking information about how to cope with the disease.
Volunteers are asked to work 50 hours a year, providing information on free HIV tests and information on support groups for people with AIDS and their families.
Training for the volunteers will take place Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. for seven weeks starting Aug. 30 at the Avance office, 5350 E. Beverly Blvd.
“If the person needs information on legal services, hospices, treatment, clinics, food assistance or anything, we have those referrals,” said volunteer trainer Antonio Jimenez, adding that the five-year-old hot line has a list of services in a 12-county area.
Volunteers also take crisis calls from people who have recently received an HIV diagnosis, he said.
The hot line is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Calls received at other hours are recorded and returned by volunteers, Jimenez said.
