Attendance at Fair Trails Pace of ’92

Although more than 60,000 people poured into the Ventura County Fair over the weekend, total attendance for the event is still trailing last year’s attendance by about 11,000.

On Saturday and Sunday, the fair had 61,291 visitors, nearly 1,400 more than the number on hand for the first weekend of the fair in 1992.

But total attendance during the first five days of the 12-day fair was only 108,225, contrasted with 119,216 during the same period last year.

Fair officials have blamed the overall drop in visitors on a lower turnout on opening day, when a grandstand performance by rock musician Michael McDonald attracted about half as many people as last year’s first-day concert by the group “Color Me Badd.”

And fair spokeswoman Teri Raley has said this year’s turnout might climb to last year’s levels by the middle of this week.

Two youth-oriented bands--Shai, which plays tonight, and SWV, scheduled to perform Thursday--are both expected to draw big crowds to the fair’s grandstand arena.
