COSTA MESA : It’s Back to School Wednesday at Wilson

Students at Wilson Elementary School will be heading back to the classroom Wednesday as part of a new schedule being implemented this year.

Summer vacation was cut short so that vacation days during the year, including Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, when many students head to Mexico to visit relatives, can be extended, school officials said.

The pilot program is also seen as a way to cut down on learning loss during the long summer break.

Wilson is the only school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to use the new schedule, and officials are worried that students might miss out on the first day of school.

All other schools in the district start Sept. 9.

“I just want to make sure that people remember,” Principal Sandra Bundy said.

“We have a lot of people moving around in the summertime who might forget (the new opening day).”
