Will he or won’t he?
That question has gripped Nigeria, where military President Ibrahim Babangida has pledged to relinquish power to civilians by Friday. Skeptical labor unions are threatening action if he breaks his word.
The Nigeria Labor Congress, a federation of 42 unions with 3.5 million members, says it will order a strike if Babangida fails to hand over the government to Senate President Iyorchia Ayu, Nigeria’s highest elected official.
NUPENG, the major union in Nigeria’s dominant oil industry, has threatened a walkout unless Moshood K.O. Abiola is installed as president. Abiola was generally acknowledged to have won elections in June that Babangida annulled.
Babangida has said he will install an interim government of soldiers and civilians.
