Long Beach : 5 Voting Areas Proposed for College Trustee Election
In an effort to diversify their board, Long Beach City College trustees this week unanimously voted to create five racially diverse voting areas for the college district.
Currently, the five members are chosen at large in the district, which serves Long Beach, Signal Hill, Avalon and parts of Lakewood. Since the board was first created in 1978, however, all the trustees have been white.
“This board has always been lily-white even with the change in demographics,” said Trustee William Millington, who chaired the committee that came up with the plan after more than two years of discussion. “We have all been in favor of a concept that would allow a broad and diverse representation on the board.”
The Long Beach population is about 50% minority, according to the 1990 Census.
The voting district map must now be approved by a county education office committee on school organization. The issue then would be placed on the ballot in the district in next April’s general election. If approved, district elections would begin in 1996.
