VAN NUYS : A Month a Pound for Stolen Shrimp

Share

Four pounds of shrimp cost a Pacoima man four months in jail.

Foster Tillman, 31, pleaded no contest Tuesday in Van Nuys Municipal Court to stealing four pounds of large shrimp that he had stuffed into his pants at a Lucky Food Center in Van Nuys.

“I stole the shrimp for a girl I know” who owed another man money, Tillman told police after the July 26 incident.

A clerk at the supermarket at 6821 Lennox Ave. observed Tillman leaving the store with “a large bulge under his shirt and waistband,” according to a police report.

Store personnel apprehended Tillman when he set off an alarm. The security system was activated by a sensor placed on the packaging at the store’s service deli, where Tillman ordered the food, authorities said.

Tillman pleaded no contest, which subjected him to the same penalties as a guilty plea, to misdemeanor theft and burglary charges.

Municipal Commissioner Mitchell Block sentenced Tillman to four months in County Jail.

Deputy City Atty. Gary Geuss said he sought a stiffer jail term because Tillman has an “extensive criminal record.”
