Freshman wide receiver/kick returner Anthony Volsan is having a rough week. Tuesday, he was a few minutes late to practice and was reprimanded by assistant coach Dennis Thurman. On Wednesday, he was on time . . . but with his jersey on backward.

Wednesday’s workout was probably the toughest so far. It was hot, smoggy and tempers flared. Willie McGinest was sent to the sideline to cool off after he was in the middle of a fight.

“We’re trying to get them to do a two-hour workout in an hour and 50 minutes,” Robinson said. “We want them to do as much work as they can but as fast as they can do it. On a 10 scale right now, we’re a three.”

Offensive tackle Tony Boselli, bothered by a groin pull, and tight end Brad Banta, slowed by a knee strain, worked in only half the drills. . . . Out of the opener Sunday against North Carolina are freshman tailback LaVale Woods because of an ankle injury, freshman defensive end Germaine Gray and redshirt freshman tailback Conrad Coleman because of knee problems, and senior offensive tackle Keith Siscel and redshirt freshman linebacker Greg Tellam because of shoulder injuries. . . . Junior cornerback Jesse Davis is questionable because of a knee injury.
