More Bad News for Giants: Clark Is Put on Disabled List
The San Francisco Giants, having lost their third consecutive game to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, later put first baseman Will Clark on the 15-day disabled list because of what Dr. Gordon Campbell described as a slight stretch of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.
The Giants will employ Todd Benzinger at first base and said they will replace Clark on the roster within 24 hours.
Clark, batting .270 with 12 home runs and 71 runs batted in, has been playing with a sore knee that he injured on Aug. 13 by fouling a ball off it.
He aggravated the condition and stretched the ligament Wednesday on a slide into second base in the fifth inning. He went to his position at the start of the sixth, but was escorted from the field by Manager Dusty Baker, who had dropped Clark to fifth in the batting order and elevated Barry Bonds to the No. 3 spot for the series finale against the Braves.
According to a statement released by the Giants, Campbell prescribed rest and rehabilitation for Clark. Surgery will not be needed, the Giants said.
