Diminutive Ducks May Force Team From Arena

The Mighty Ducks are supposed to become a brawny team that won’t get pushed around. But the NHL expansion team might have to move out of Anaheim Arena for a few days during training camp to make way for a pee wee team--none other than the pipsqueak Mighty Ducks of movie fame.

“MD2: The Champions”--the sequel to the movie that inspired the name for the NHL expansion team--was filmed in part at Anaheim Arena during July. But General Manager Jack Ferreira got word recently that some scenes needed re-shooting. Because they’re all part of the Walt Disney Co. family, the NHL Ducks will practice elsewhere during the filming.

“We don’t know exactly what the dates are, and we don’t know if it will be three days or six days or something else,” said Ferreira, adding that there’s still an outside chance the conflict could be avoided.

The team’s plan is to work out a few blocks away at Glacial Gardens Ice Arena, its regular practice site, or move to the San Diego Sports Arena for about five days, Ferreira said. The San Diego Gulls are the Ducks’ minor league affiliate.

“Your immediate concern is ‘What’s our alternative?’ ” Ferreira said. “We’re covered, because we can go to Glacial Gardens.”
