Lapine on Broadway: Shubert Organization president Bernard Jacobs confirmed that writer-director James Lapine will be working out of Shubert headquarters in New York. Lapine, whose play “Luck, Pluck & Virtue” closes this weekend at the La Jolla Playhouse, will move in immediately. While the relationship will not be exclusive, the Shuberts have “made a commitment to support him, give him space, see if he develops product and support the product,” Jacobs said. The Shuberts haven’t taken anyone in-house in many years. Pulitzer and Tony winner Lapine, 44, collaborated with Stephen Sondheim on “Sunday in the Park With George” and “Into the Woods” and with composer-lyricist William Finn on “Falsettos” and other musicals.

For Music Education: A power group of film composers is expected to attend a fund-raiser for the Los Angeles Community Coalition for Music Education tonight at the Hollywood Bowl Museum. Lalo Schifrin, Brad Fiedel, David Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bruce Broughton, David Raksin, Dan Foliart, Elmer Bernstein, Basil Poledouris, Patrick Williams and Leonard Rosenman will be on hand to support music education in Southern California. The fund-raiser, which will precede the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra’s second Bowl performance this weekend, is sold out.

Chasing Guests: As the talk-show wars heat up next month, Fox’s “Chevy Chase Show” will weigh in with a premiere-week full of guests with drawing power. Whoopi Goldberg is joining already-announced Goldie Hawn on Chase’s first outing Sept. 7. Jim Belushi and “Beverly Hills, 90210’s” Jason Priestley show up Sept. 8. Harry Anderson and Martin Short are guests on Sept. 9 and on Sept. 10, Chase has Kathleen Turner and Robert Townsend.

March Redux: Cable’s BET network, which caters to African-American viewers, will offer live coverage of the march on Washington near the Lincoln Memorial today. The event marks the 30th anniversary of the march led by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1963. . . .Also today, Reprise Records will release “March On,” an album commemorating the 1963 gathering and the continuing struggle for civil rights. The album features songs recorded at a concert held in April at the Mason Temple in Memphis, where King preached his final “Mountain Top” sermon.

Disc-overy: In the continuing debate over used CDs, Wherehouse Entertainment said it is satisfied with CEMA Distribution’s recent decision to resume co-op advertising with retailers that sell second-hand discs. “We believe that CEMA’s decision is a victory for consumers who like the idea of buying and selling used CDs. . .,” said Wherehouse president and CEO Scott Young. He also said the company will drop its anti-trust suit against CEMA. Three other defendants--Sony, Uni and WEA--are still named in the suit in Los Angeles federal court. L.A.-based CEMA is the U.S. distribution arm of EMI Music.

Marked Man: Marky Mark is in trouble with anti-bias groups again, this time for an anti-gay remark he allegedly made during a reported fight with an employee of Madonna’s Maverick Records in Los Angeles last month. The rapper had agreed to finance and appear in a public service spot denouncing bias-motivated violence to atone for past incidents of homophobia and racial harassment. But the groups that had taken him to task before said they were canceling the spot because of the recent incident. Those groups include the New York chapter of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, the Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence and the Anti-Violence Campaign.

Update: Two additional counts, one for stalking and one for making harassing phone calls, were filed by the L.A. City Attorney’s Office Friday against actor James Farentino, who is accused of threatening his ex-girlfriend Tina Sinatra, daughter of Frank Sinatra. Farentino was already charged with four misdemeanor counts stemming from actions he allegedly took following the couple’s breakup last January. His arraignment was postponed to Sept. 20 as a result of the two additional counts. Farentino has denied the allegations.

U2 will be among the performers set for the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards to be broadcast live from the Universal Amphitheatre on Thursday. Presenters recently added to the show include Lyle Lovett, Cindy Crawford, Arrested Development and Shaquille O’Neal. . . .Roseanne and Tom Arnold recently agreed to pay $20,000 to Gary Aloinan, a photographer who said Tom Arnold beat him up and broke his camera equipment when he snapped the couple’s picture at Los Angeles International Airport in 1990. Arnold denied striking the man but admitted disabling his equipment. . . . Portland Trail Blazer Clyde Drexler, L.A. Laker Vlade Divac and Boston Celtic Xavier McDaniel will all have walk-on, make that dribble-on, roles on the Sept. 5 season premiere of Fox’s “Married . . . With Children.”
