Fred Claire, Dodger executive vice president, met with Dodger players before Friday’s game to tell them about a voluntary, six-game Far Eastern trip after the season, for which they would be compensated. However, it was made clear that Dodger President Peter O’Malley, who has long been active in promoting baseball internationally, wants as many players as possible to go.

It will be the Dodgers’ first visit to Japan since 1966. They also might play in South Korea and Taiwan.

The Dodgers have until Oct. 31 to decide whether to pick up the $3.5-million option on Brett Butler’s contract for next season or pay $500,000 to buy him out. Butler said he would not go on the Far Eastern trip, which could last beyond Oct. 31, if his status is in limbo.

Eric Davis and Lenny Harris suffered ankle injuries Wednesday night. Davis was unavailable Friday night; Harris entered the game in the 10th inning. Davis, who has 33 stolen bases this season, needs one more to reach 300 for his career. . . . Claire said Darryl Strawberry took batting practice again Friday and felt fine.
