Miller Wins Two More Gymnastics Titles

National all-around champion Shannon Miller added titles in the uneven bars and floor exercise Saturday night in the final session of the National Gymnastics Championships at Salt Lake City.

Miller, who easily won the all-around title Friday night over Dominique Dawes, lost the vaulting championship to her Saturday night. Dawes also won on the balance beam.

Earlier, John Roethlisberger added a still-rings championship to his third all-around gold. Steve McCain was an upset winner on the horizontal bar, Chris Waller won his third consecutive national pommel horse championship and Chainey Umphrey won the parallel bars. McCain, Waller and Umphrey competed for UCLA.

College Football

Former Miami safety Bennie Blades told the Sun-Sentinel of Ft. Lauderdale that an agent, Mel Levine of Ft. Lauderdale, arranged for him and five other Hurricane players to receive thousands of dollars in cash payments in apparent violation of NCAA rules during the team’s 1987 national championship season.

Blades told the newspaper that the players received the money with the understanding they would sign contracts with Levine after their eligibility expired.

All did sign with Levine, and four are now in the NFL. Blades and receiver Brett Perriman are with the Detroit Lions, receiver Michael Irvin is with the Dallas Cowboys and Brian Blades, Bennie’s brother, is a receiver with the Seattle Seahawks.

The other players involved were safeties Darrell Fullington and Selwyn Brown, Blades told the Sun-Sentinel.

Levine, who is no longer an agent, denied breaking any rules in dealing with the players.

The alleged payments do not fall within the NCAA’s four-year statute of limitations for rules violations.

Track and Field

World long jump champion Heike Drechsler of Germany got revenge against Jackie Joyner-Kersee, beating her by half an inch at a meet at Innsbruck, Austria.

Drechsler leaped 23 feet 1/2 inch, to Joyner-Kersee’s 23-0. On Friday, Joyner-Kersee had beaten Drechsler by quarter of an inch at Berlin.

Americans took the top two places in the men’s long jump, with Reggie Jones winning at 25-9 1/2 and Gordon McKee finishing second at 25-0 3/4.

Amy Acuff won the women’s high jump at 6-4, a U.S. high school record. Acuff, who has signed a national letter of intent with UCLA, held the record of 6-3 set last year.

Auto Racing

Mark Martin overtook Rusty Wallace with 12 laps to go and won the Bud 500 stock car race at Bristol, Tenn. Martin averaged 88.172 m.p.h. for his 10th career victory.

France’s Alain Prost, the Formula One points leader, set a lap record in edging English teammate Damon Hill and winning his 11th pole position this season at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Williams-Renault team dominated the two days of qualifying, running 1-2 for the 10th time in 12 races this season.

Canada’s Scott Goodyear edged Bobby Rahal for the pole position in the Indy car race at Vancouver. Nigel Mansell of Britain, the runaway leader in the PPG Cup points race, qualified third.

Boxing

Virgil Hill retained his World Boxing Assn. light-heavyweight title for the 13th time, scoring a unanimous decision over Sergio Merani of Argentina at Bismarck, N.D. The fight was the first for Hill (36-1) since shoulder surgery in April.

Miscellany

Bobby Hansen, who played at the University of Iowa before a nine-year NBA career, was charged with drunk driving and speeding after being stopped by police for allegedly driving 100 m.p.h. on a Des Moines freeway.

Lance Bade of Colorado Springs led the U.S. shooting team to its greatest single-day performance ever while winning the trap-shooting gold medal at the World Cup final at Munich. Team USA won a gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Leontien van Moorsel of the Netherlands beat Jeannie Ciprelli-Longo of France by inches, preventing Ciprelli-Longo from winning the women’s 92-kilometer road race at the World Cycling Championships for an unprecedented fifth time at Oslo.

Seventh-seeded Deb Richardson of Santa Barbara and top-seeded Karolyn Kirby of San Diego were the top qualifiers advancing to the finals of the 14th and final event of the Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour at Powell, Ohio.
