LAGUNA BEACH : Severed Cables Cut Phone, 911 Service

Share

A pair of telephone cables were accidentally cut at a construction site near Crystal Cove State Park at noon Monday, interrupting service--including the emergency 911 line--in Laguna Beach for several hours.

One of the severed cables served 50 homes in the residential area of Crystal Cove, where all phone service was shut down for eight hours, said Mike Murray, a spokesman for GTE. Service resumed at 8 p.m., Murray said.

In Laguna Beach, residents could not call out of town or use the 911 emergency line until 5 p.m. because a fiber-optic cable linking the city with an outside switching center was also cut, Murray said. Local calls were not affected.

The Laguna Beach Police Department brought in extra personnel to handle the local phone lines and issued a radio alert that the 911 lines were temporarily out of service, said Sgt. Don Barney.

“We have been very fortunate it has been a quiet day otherwise--just business as usual,” Barney said.
