U.S. Allots $49.6 Million for Subway Construction
U.S. Secretary of Transportation Frederico Pena presented a $49.6-million check to the county’s transit agency Tuesday to help pay for continued construction of the Red Line subway.
The money will be used to extend the subway along the Wilshire corridor, part of the $1.4-billion section of subway that is slated to open for passengers in 1996.
The Wilshire corridor line will continue west from the Westlake/MacArthur Park station, currently the last station on the Red Line. This segment will have three stations along Wilshire Boulevard, located at Vermont, Normandie and Western avenues.
The federal funds were allocated in 1990.
“With these funds in hand, we can proceed with the installation of mechanical and air handling systems, and with the completion of the fire protection systems,” said Franklin E. White, head of the MTA.
Pena also gave the MTA $300,000 to launch a program aimed at making the transit system more user-friendly to non-English speaking passengers. This project may include bilingual signs and rider information materials.
