Southern Pacific Rail to Cut 800 More Jobs: The nation’s sixth-largest freight rail company said it has lost about $40 million in the last two months from the Midwestern floods and will lay off additional workers to cut costs. The San Francisco-based company had already announced it would lay off 1,600 workers in 1993. The added reductions will come from both management and labor forces. The company will also furlough about 950 maintenance employees until early next year.
