COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Donahue to Name Starter at Quarterback Today

Share

Coach Terry Donahue said that he would name his starting quarterback before practice today after talks with assistant coaches, the players involved and the training staff. He has narrowed the choice to Wayne Cook or Ryan Fien.

Previous statements have fostered the belief that Cook would be No. 1 against Cal, but he has been hampered by a thigh injury that kept him sidelined for five days.

“He’s clearly better,” Donahue said of Cook’s condition, “but I’m not convinced he’s well. . . . The first thing he said today when I asked him was that he felt great. That’s the first time he’s said that in a long time.”

Injury report: Tight end Brian Allen will sit out against California on Saturday night after arthroscopic surgery on his knee Tuesday. Wide receiver Bryan Adams will sit out because of a pulled hamstring, linebacker Chris Sanchez because of knee problems. Because of a hip pointers, kick returner Derek Ayers will be available for limited duty only.

Nose guard Sale Isaia, penciled in as a starter after spring practice, is sidelined because of academic difficulty, which he is trying to remedy in summer school. If he is able to do so, he could be available for the Nebraska game on Sept. 18.
